नई दिल्ली: भारतीय प्रौद्योगिकी संस्थान दिल्ली (आई.आई.टी. दिल्ली) का प्रतिष्ठित डोगरा हॉल 20 जनवरी, 2026 को नासा एस्ट्रोनॉट (सेवानिवृत्त) एवं अमेरिकी नौसेना की कैप्टन (सेवानिवृत्त) सुनीता एल. विलियम्स के आगमन पर प्रशंसा और सम्मान के जयघोष से गूंज उठा।

'द मेकिंग ऑफ एन एस्ट्रोनॉट: सुनीता विलियम्स स्टोरी' विषय पर उनके प्रभावशाली व्याख्यान ने दर्शकों को अंतरिक्ष की विशालता को निकटता से महसूस कराते हुए एक्स्पेडिशन 71/72 के दौरान उनके हालिया अंतरिक्ष मिशन की यात्रा का अनुभव दिया। आई.आई.टी. दिल्ली समुदाय के लिए उनका आतिथ्य करना और उनकी अद्वितीय यात्रा से प्रेरणा प्राप्त करना एक गर्व का विषय था।

सुश्री विलियम्स प्रो. वी. एन. वज़ीरानी की स्मृति में उनके पुत्रों, विजय वज़ीरानी और उमेश वज़ीरानी द्वारा शुरू किए गए प्रो. वी. एन. वज़ीरानी संस्थान व्याख्यान की मुख्य वक्ता थीं। इस कार्यक्रम में आई.आई.टी. दिल्ली के निदेशक, उप निदेशक और संकायाध्यक्ष के साथ-साथ संकाय सदस्यों, शोधकर्ताओं और बड़ी संख्या में उत्साही विद्यार्थियों ने अपनी उपस्थिति दर्ज़ कराई।

सुश्री विलियम्स ने प्रो. रंगन बनर्जी, निदेशक, आई.आई.टी. दिल्ली और संस्थान के वरिष्ठ प्रशासन से मुलाकात की। निदेशक ने अंतरिक्ष प्रौद्योगिकी में आई.आई.टी. दिल्ली के योगदान और इसरो के साथ चल रही संयुक्त साझेदारियों पर प्रकाश डाला।

अपने वक्तव्य में, सुश्री विलियम्स ने मानव अंतरिक्ष उड़ान के वर्तमान चरण पर विचार करते हुए कहा, "यह मानव अंतरिक्ष अन्वेषण के लिए एक बहुत ही रोमांचक समय है। प्रत्येक नई परियोजना में उतार-चढ़ाव होते हैं लेकिन यह हमें कुछ न कुछ सिखाती है और आने वाली चुनौतियों के लिए हमे बेहतर रूप से तैयार करती है।”

अंतरिक्ष मिशनों की जटिलता के बारे में बताते हुए उन्होंने कहा कि "हम अक्सर कई सिस्टम्स और रिडंडेंसी के साथ काम करते हैं, लेकिन कभी-कभी समाधान बहुत जटिल नहीं होता है; यदि आप सावधानीपूर्वक निरीक्षण करने को तैयार हैं तो यह कुछ सरल भी हो सकता है।”

श्रोताओं से शून्य गुरुत्वाकर्षण की कल्पना करने को कहते हुए उन्होंने कहा, “जब आप गुरुत्वाकर्षण को हटा देते हैं, तो यह  समझना शुरू करते हैं कि सामग्री, दवाइयाँ और यहाँ तक कि मानव व्यवहार कैसे बदलते हैं। यह समझ हमें अपने और ब्रह्मांड के बारे में अधिक जानने में मदद करती है।”

इसके बाद प्रो. शिल्पी शर्मा, सह संकायाध्यक्ष, अकादमिक आउटरीच एवं नई पहलें द्वारा एक फायरसाइड चैट का आयोजन किया गया। आई.आई.टी. दिल्ली समुदाय का प्रतिनिधित्व करते हुए, प्रोफेसर शर्मा ने समुदाय के प्रश्नों को आधार बनाकर बातचीत को सुश्री विलियम्स की जीवन यात्रा से जोड़ते हुए आगे बढ़ाया। इस सत्र में, उन्होंने सुनीता विलियम्स के बचपन, खिलाड़ी और स्विमर के रूप में उनका अनुशासन, टीमवर्क, और दीर्घकालिक चुनौतियों का सामना करने के अनुभवों को शामिल करते हुए उनके जीवन तथा उनकी यात्रा से जुड़े व्यक्तिगत पहलुओं पर प्रकाश डाला।

बचपन के अनुभवों ने उन्हें कैसे आकार दिया, इस बारे में बताते हुए, सुनीता विलियम्स ने कहा कि "जब आप किसी उद्देश्य की दिशा में एक टीम के रूप में काम करते हैं, तो आप व्यक्तिगत सफलता के बारे में सोचना बंद कर देते हैं और यह सोचना शुरू कर देते हैं कि पूरी टीम कैसे बेहतर हो सकती है।”

सुश्री विलियम्स ने बड़े ही उत्साहपूर्वक अपने जीवन से जुड़ी एक दिलचस्प याद को सभी के साथ साझा किया जिसने दर्शकों के मन में गहरा प्रभाव डाला -  “अंतरिक्ष में भारतीय खाने से भरी एक पैकेट खोलना अविश्वसनीय था। इस घटना को और विशेष, और यादगार बनाते हुए मैंने खाने के इस पैकेट को अपने क्रू मेंबर्स के साथ साझा किया। भोजन लोगों को एक साथ लाने का तरीका है, ऑर्बिट के संबंध में भी यह बात पूरी तरह सच है।”

अंतरिक्ष से प्राप्त नज़रिए के बारे में बोलते हुए उन्होंने कहा, "ऊपर से पृथ्वी को देखना आपको 'ओवरव्यू इफ़ेक्ट’ देता है। आप समझने लगते हैं कि हम सभी एक ही ग्रह पर रह रहे हैं, एक दूसरे से गहरे में जुड़े हुए हैं और सभी सीमाएँ अचानक निरर्थक और अप्रासंगिक लगने लगती हैं।”

New Delhi: The iconic Dogra Hall at the Indian Institute of Technology Delhi (IIT Delhi) hailed in unison as a mark of deep admiration and respect for Sunita L. Williams, NASA astronaut (ret.) & U.S. Navy Captain (ret.), during her visit to IIT Delhi on January 20, 2026.

Her impressive talk titled ‘The Making of an Astronaut: Sunita Williams' Story’ on space experiences made the audience “space travel” to her recent space mission during Expeditions 71/72, making the vastness of space seem in proximity. For the IITD community, it was truly an honour to host her and to be inspired by her extraordinary journey.

Ms. Williams was the inaugural speaker of the Prof. V. N. Vazirani Institute Lecture, established in memory of Prof. V. N. Vazirani by his sons, Vijay Vazirani and Umesh Vazirani. The event was graced by several distinguished dignitaries of IIT Delhi, including the Director, Deputy Directors, and Deans, along with faculty members, researchers, and a large gathering of enthusiastic students.

Ms. Williams met Prof. Rangan Banerjee, Director, IIT Delhi, alongside the senior administration of the Institute. The Director highlighted IIT Delhi’s footprints in space technology and the ongoing joint collaborations with ISRO.

In her talk, Ms. Williams reflected on the current phase of human spaceflight, remarking, “It is a very exciting time in human space exploration. Every new project has its ups and downs, but each one teaches us something and prepares us better for what comes next.”

Speaking about the complexity of space missions, she explained, “We often work with multiple systems and redundancies, but sometimes the solution is not very complicated; it can be something simple if you are willing to observe carefully.”

Asking the audience to imagine zero gravity, she said, “When you take gravity away, you start to understand the nuances of how materials, medicine, and even human behaviour change. That understanding helps us learn more about ourselves and the universe.”

The talk was followed by a fireside chat moderated by Prof. Shilpi Sharma, Associate Dean, Academic Outreach & New Initiatives. Representing the collective voice of the IIT Delhi community, Prof. Sharma drew from questions shared by the community and navigated the conversation through Ms. Williams’ journey, offering more personal insights into her life and journey, exploring her childhood, discipline as a student-athlete and swimmer, teamwork, and coping with long-duration missions.

Speaking of how childhood experiences shaped her, she said, “When you work as a team towards a common objective, you stop thinking only about individual success and start thinking about how the entire team can be better.”

Sharing a memory that resonated strongly with the audience, Ms. Williams deliciously recalled, “Opening a package full of Indian food in space was incredible. What made it special was sharing it with my crewmates. Food has a way of bringing people together, even in orbit.”

Speaking about perspective gained from space, she said, “Looking at Earth from above gives you the ‘overview effect.’ You realise we are all living on one planet, deeply connected, and boundaries start to feel meaningless.”
