SUSTAINABILITY POLICY

Sustainability Policy

The Indian Institute of Technology Delhi is a premier engineering education institution of India. Our 312-acre urban campus in the heart of New Delhi, one of the world’s largest metropolitan areas of the world densely packed with more than 30 million people, puts us at the intersection of a number of critical environmental hazards of the contemporary world. These include immense sustainability challenges such as rapid urbanization, resource scarcity, and waste management. We recognize our role and responsibility in solving this pressing challenge because our value system requires us to address such matters as national and global concern. We here at IIT Delhi, have embraced this responsibility by creating a campus that integrates renewable energy, water conservation, and waste recycling into its daily operations. Sustainable building practices and energy efficient infrastructure have transformed our campus into a living laboratory for responsible resource use.

The Sustainability Policy brings divergent efforts under one framework that enables synergistic interactions to maximize and scale up the outcomes. Building a sustainable planet that meets the needs of the present while preserving it for the future generations is perhaps the greatest challenge facing humanity today. We have taken this opportunity to build a comprehensive Sustainability Policy dedicated to advancing sustainability solutions for our campus and for the nation. Our faculty and students are developing affordable technologies for clean energy, sustainable agriculture, and circular economy models, while embedding sustainability into the curriculum and campus culture. These efforts not only strengthen our institution but also prepare our graduates to lead in industries and communities where sustainability is essential. We note that there are still many challenges ahead of us. In the coming years IIT Delhi will be taking more steps towards becoming a model institution for sustainable development.

GREENHOUSE GAS EMISSION INVENTORY

Climate change driven by greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions from human activity stands as one of the most urgent issues for the planet. According to the GHG Protocol, emissions are classified into three categories: (i) Scope 1, direct emissions from an organization’s own activities; (ii) Scope 2, emissions from purchased electricity; and (iii) Scope 3, indirect emissions across the value chain.

IIT Delhi is committed to global responsibility and has set the ambitious goal of achieving Net Zero emissions by 2040. A cornerstone of this effort is the annual GHG Emission Inventory, mandated by our Sustainability Policy. This inventory provides a rigorous assessment of Scope 1 and Scope 2 emissions, along with key components of Scope 3, in alignment with the GHG Protocol. While challenges remain, we are determined to advance steadily toward becoming a model institution for sustainable development.

Our faculty and students are actively engaged in creating affordable solutions for achieving Net Zero goals. Sustainability is being integrated into both curriculum and campus culture, ensuring graduates are prepared to lead in environmentally responsible industries and communities. Through these initiatives, IIT Delhi strengthens its institutional resilience while contributing meaningfully to the global fight against climate change.
