New Delhi: The Indian Institute of Technology Delhi (IIT Delhi) has announced the naming of the Exhibition Hall at its main campus in New Delhi as the “Binny Bansal Exhibition Hall”, in honour of its distinguished alumnus Mr. Binny Bansal, co-founder of the Indian online retail giant Flipkart.

Mr. Bansal has made the largest-ever unrestricted individual donation to IIT Delhi through significant contributions to the IIT Delhi Endowment Fund. In recognition of his extraordinary generosity and long-term commitment to his alma mater, and on the recommendation of the Naming Committee, the Board for Educational and Research Planning (BERP) has approved the proposal to name the Exhibition Hall, located on the ground floor of the Main Building, in his honour.

The announcement was made by Prof. Rangan Banerjee, Director, IIT Delhi, during an Alumni Mixer held in Singapore, which brought together prominent alumni, entrepreneurs, and donors to discuss the Institute’s future growth and priorities.

Along with the Director, Prof. Rangan Banerjee, IIT Delhi was represented by Prof. Nilanjan Senroy, Dean of Alumni Relations; Prof. Abhijit Abhyankar; and Mona Singh, CEO of the IIT Delhi Endowment Management Foundation, who engaged in one-on-one conversations with alumni, including leading founders such as Saurabh Mittal and Binny Bansal.

The Exhibition Hall, a key space on campus for hosting academic showcases, innovation expos, student projects, and institutional events, will now serve as a visible symbol of alumni philanthropy and leadership.

Through the support of donors like Binny Bansal, the IIT Delhi General Endowment helps power a range of strategic initiatives including scholarships for meritorious students, seed support for cutting-edge research, strengthening of innovation and entrepreneurship ecosystems, and the development of world-class physical and digital infrastructure. This contribution is expected to further enable IIT Delhi to create an environment where faculty and students can pursue high-impact work with global relevance.

“Binny Bansal has set a new benchmark and inspired generations of alumni to give back towards the Institute’s growth and long-term vision,” Prof. Rangan Banerjee, Director, IIT Delhi said.

“Support to the General Endowment strengthens IIT Delhi’s ability to invest flexibly in priority areas such as research, student support, and innovation, and helps us build a more resilient and future-ready institution,” Prof. Banerjee added

The announcement in Singapore also underscored the growing momentum of alumni philanthropy at IIT Delhi, particularly among global alumni leaders and founders who are playing a pivotal role in shaping the Institute’s trajectory. The IIT Delhi Endowment Management Foundation continues to work closely with alumni and well-wishers across the world to build a strong, sustainable endowment that can support transformative initiatives in teaching, research, and innovation for decades to come.
