New Delhi: IIT Delhi’s Indian Knowledge Systems (IKS) Programme, a Ram and Mithlesh Gupta Foundation funded research project, NSS, Debating Club, AINA, and Kaizen on the eve of Swami Vivekananda Jayanti, on 11th January 2024, celebrated his timeless teachings and their relevance in today’s world.
The event featured talks by Dr. Partha Ghosh, renowned policy advisor and Professor of Practice, Tufts University, USA; Ms. Sahana Singh, author & researcher; and Prof. Nomesh Bolia, Professor and Principal Investigator of the IKS Programme at IIT Delhi, exploring Vedantic philosophy, leadership, and India’s educational heritage.
The discourse explored how Swami Vivekananda's 1893 speech transformed global perceptions of India, emphasizing civilizational identity, leadership, and the transformative power of ancient education
Prof. Bolia contextualized Swami Vivekananda’s legacy during colonial times, highlighting his role in inspiring global respect for India’s civilization and leaders like Jamsetji Tata and Nikola Tesla. “Vivekananda’s belief in India’s spiritual and philosophical roots reignited national confidence and reshaped global attitudes towards Indian civilization,” said Prof. Bolia.
Dr. Ghosh emphasized the enduring relevance of Vedanta, urging everyone to view it as a practical guide to life rather than mere philosophy. “His message was a call to action, urging individuals to embrace responsibility and lead with purpose,” said Dr. Ghosh. He outlined seven Vedantic imperatives—ranging from inquisitiveness to selflessness—as key principles for personal growth and leadership.
Ms. Singh shed light on India’s ancient education system, noting its interdisciplinary, nature-centric approach and global impact. She talked about its decline under colonial policies but called for its research-driven revival. “Our ancient knowledge systems are being rediscovered worldwide under new names. It’s time we reclaim and integrate them into modern education,” said Ms. Singh.
The event concluded with a call to embrace Swami Vivekananda’s teachings in thought and action.
