Faculty Housing

The institute is located in a bustling area of Delhi with shopping malls, multiplexes, food joints, and markets in the vicinity, and the metro rail network connects the whole city. See Metro Map. IIT Delhi is a green and vibrant campus, situated in South Delhi. IIT Delhi also has a modern crèche to care for your kids while you are at work, as we together strive to attain the ideal work-life balance. New faculty members are provided a guest house room on arrival. Please ensure that the arrival plans are communicated to your Head and E1 in advance so a reservation can be made for you for the date of your arrival.
The institute offers HRA (based on salary) if a faculty member opts to stay off-campus. Regular on-campus accommodation is limited and allotted on a regular schedule, based on availability. The estate unit advertises vacancy by email and invites applications. Each vacant unit is subsequently allotted to the senior most applicant as per their entitlement. At the moment, there is a shortage of regular accommodation on-campus, requiring new faculty members to spend up to 3-4 years in transit accommodation; either on-campus or off-campus.

Transit Housing

On-campus transit housing is limited to a few one-bedroom flats available in the New Nalanda Apartments. Construction for phase-II of the New Nalanda Apartments is ongoing and a few more one-bedroom flats should become available soon.Given the current constraints, we have made arrangements for off-campus transit accommodation near Chhatarpur Metro Station - about 7 Kms from IIT Delhi campus with a commute time of about 20 minutes. This is an apartment style accommodation with ten 3-4BHK flats, which can be allotted as per availability. For the faculty members occupying this facility, normal HRA will be deducted from the consolidated renumeration as applicable as per norms. Electricity charges are to be paid by the allottees and a monthly charge of Rs 2000/- is also to be paid for maintenance (this includes water charges). Once allotted, the faculty member is required to give their acceptance within 5 days and occupy / vacate the facility within 15 days of the issue of allotment letter. For faculty members who are keen on living in on-campus accommodation, but unable to do so due to housing shortage, we provide the facility of taking up a house off-campus by signing a three-party rent agreement with the institute as one of the parties for a rental amount of up to ₹50,000 per month. Please contact the Dean Faculty (deanf@iitd.ac.in) for more details on rental agreements. While staying in transit accommodation (both on-campus and off-campus), you are required to look out for estate circulars, and apply for houses advertised that you are eligible for. The following sections briefly explain the allotment process.

On-Campus Accommodation

Apartments and houses on campus are divided into two different geographical areas: Old Campus and New Campus with a total of about 600 houses on campus. A small license fee will be deducted from your salary for the accommodation. House allotment is prioritized by seniority. Seniority is by the date you join the institute or become eligible for a particular category house. If you join the institute in the afternoon, someone joining in the forenoon of the same day gets higher priority in housing. In addition, a one-time antedating of seniority date is allowed for new faculty members whereby you receive a 50% credit for formal post-PhD work experience that may be outside IIT Delhi. Antedating requires an application; be sure to request antedating at the time of joining. Antedating is applicable only for a house at one level lower than your eligibility and certain houses do not allow antedating. Remember that houses are allotted solely for residential purposes. Also, if a faculty member fails to accept the allotment of a house within 7 days from the date of the allotment letter or fails to take possession of that residence after acceptance within 21 days from the date of the letter, their allotment is liable to be cancelled. Further, such refusal leads to a ban from applying for another house for one year from the date of the letter.

Setting up and Settling in

The non-trivial task of setting up the house begins after the allotment. Institute provides network services (request CSC for set up), internal telephone service ( IIT Delhi Infrastructure Support), basic electrical equipment (like fans and tube lights) and water supply. Many houses also have PNG connection. Electrical and civil maintenance services are also provided. After-hours emergency maintenance is also available. Maintenance is run by a relatively small staff, and requests are many - it can take days to fix some problems. Please do not wait before lodging complaints. You can expect to need their help when you first move in (and later as well).

You will also need to apply for the supply of electricity. and PNG or other utilities as per requirement (like external landline telephone, TV cable/DTH service, etc.)
You will also need to furnish your house. There are many various furniture markets near IITD or you may also explore online platforms to decorate your house.
