Mr. Gill underscores importance of getting young people involved with Global Digital Compact
Points out importance of young innovators and students in making technology development fair and equal

New Delhi: Mr. Amandeep Singh Gill, UN Under-Secretary-General for Digital and Emerging Technologies and Secretary-General's Envoy on Technology, visited the Indian Institute of Technology Delhi (IIT Delhi) on January 8, 2025, and delivered a talk on ‘UN@80: New Direction for Technology Governance’. Mr. Amandeep Singh Gill spoke about technology and artificial intelligence (AI) governance.
The event highlighted the importance of having frameworks that include all stakeholders and for countries to work together so that technology and AI can benefit the society at large.
Mr Gill discussed AI governance and the shifting trends of AI in the years to come with IIT Delhi Director, Prof. Rangan Banerjee, the distinguished Deans and other faculty members.
Post the discussion with IIT Delhi’s senior functionaries, Mr. Gill took a tour of startups incubated at the Foundation for Innovation and Technology Transfer, IIT Delhi. He met with teams from Cyran AI, Mobisec, Tensor Dynamics, and Synergy Quantum. The startups briefed him about their work and how their solutions could help with societal issues.
During his address to a gathering of students and faculty from IIT Delhi and beyond, Mr. Gill discussed the changing AI governance and the outcomes of the Global Digital Compact (GDC). He also emphasized the importance of getting young people involved with the GDC adopted by the UN members in September 2024. Mr. Gill pointed out how important young innovators and students are in making technology development fair and equal.
This visit shows the common goals of IIT Delhi and the United Nations to promote fair and ethical AI governance while enabling new innovators and future leaders to create real change.
The session progressed with a fireside chat hosted by Prof. Vaishnavi Sundarajan from the Department of Computer Science and Engineering, IIT Delhi. The engaging discussion provided thoughtful insights and addressed the audience’s curiosity about AI governance and its global implications.
The visit concluded with a vote of thanks by Prof. Narayanan D. Kurur (Dean, Academics, IIT Delhi). Prof. Kurur thanked the audience for their participation and the team of Academic Outreach, IIT Delhi, for organizing the event.
