New Delhi: IIT Delhi and Sorbonne University, France, are further strengthening their strategic partnership with an expanded vision that spans advanced research, academic programmes, mobility, and innovation across emerging areas of global importance.

The collaboration reflects the growing momentum of the India–France strategic partnership and the shared commitment of both nations to advancing knowledge, technology, and societal impact.

Building upon the strong foundation of the jointly established Franco-Indian Integrated Health Campus, IIT Delhi and Sorbonne University are launching a joint Master’s programme in Biological Science and a joint PhD programme in 2026, creating new pathways for students and researchers to benefit from the strengths of both institutions.

In June 2026, a high-level delegation from IIT Delhi led by the Director, Prof. Rangan Banerjee, visited Sorbonne University to further strengthen institutional ties and explore new avenues of collaboration.

During the visit, the discussions focused on expanding the partnership beyond healthcare into frontier domains such as Material Science, Artificial Intelligence, Informatics, Computer Science, Robotics, and other interdisciplinary areas with high societal and technological relevance.

Speaking about the partnership with Sorbonne University, Prof. Rangan Banerjee, Director, IIT Delhi, said, “We are delighted with our partnership with Sorbonne University in healthcare. We have started joint Masters and PhD programmes with two-way student mobility. As we expand into emerging areas such as AI, sustainable technologies, materials science, and robotics, we envision creating a vibrant ecosystem that enables transformative research, talent development, and societal impact.”

The collaboration aligns closely with the broader India–France strategic partnership, which has identified education, research, innovation, health, and digital technologies as key pillars of cooperation. It also supports the joint vision of both countries to deepen people-to-people connections and build long-term scientific partnerships in the Indo-Pacific region.

Looking ahead, IIT Delhi and Sorbonne University plan to further expand cooperation through enhanced sharing of research infrastructure and facilities, increased student and faculty exchanges, co-supervised doctoral research, joint degree programmes, international schools and workshops, and collaborative research initiatives addressing global challenges.

The Franco-Indian Integrated Health Campus, which is at the heart of the partnership between both institutes, was established as a pioneering platform for interdisciplinary research and education in healthcare.

The campus brings together expertise from engineering, medicine, life sciences, social sciences, and digital technologies to address contemporary healthcare challenges through collaborative innovation. The Integrated Health Campus has already enabled a range of academic activities, including joint research projects, student internships, faculty and student mobility programmes, workshops, and scientific exchanges.

The growing significance of the IIT Delhi–Sorbonne University partnership has also been acknowledged at the highest levels of leadership. Recently, the collaboration was highlighted by French President Emmanuel Macron during his address at Bharat Innovates 2026, underscoring its importance as a flagship initiative of Indo-French scientific and educational cooperation.
