New Delhi, 10 Dec 2022:  IIT Delhi's flagship industry-academia partnership event “Industry Day” held on December 10, 2022 focussed on future-ready solutions in the field of healthcare technologies, electric vehicle research, communications and sustainable clean energy and environment. The technologies showcased within each of these themes also includes those which are being developed in collaboration with industry partners.

IIT Delhi is engaging with industry through centres of excellence in specified areas of research like oil technology, smart technology enabled manufacturing, waste to wealth, sustainable infrastructure, climate change and air pollution, energy and environment, 5G and artifical intelligence.

Inaugurating the 4th Edition of Industry Day, chief guest Mr Anant Krishnan, Executive Vice President and CTO, Tata Consultancy Services, emphasised the need to create more future-ready solutions from IIT Delhi and how the four themes of the Industry Day are interlinked to India's mission of “atma nirbharta”. He also highlighted TCS’ collaboration with IIT Delhi's research ecosystem and its commitment to further strengthen the partnership.

Underlining the importance of Industry-academia collaboration Prof. Rangan Banerjee, Director, IIT Delhi, said, “Industry can benefit in multiple ways when it partners with premier technology institutions like IIT Delhi. Industry gets access to world class research facilities, an opportunity to look at the problems from a new perspective and find path-breaking solutions. On the other hand, Industry leaders can have a role in shaping the future generations when they engage with academia. To make India atma nirbhar (self-reliant), our Industries need to be globally competitive and we are committed to working with industry so that we can make a difference through our research and knowledge."

Prof Banerjee also urged industry leaders to participate in the ongoing process of curriculum review at IIT Delhi.

The daylong event proved to be the perfect opportunity for the industry to have a sneak peak into IIT Delhi’s research and develoed technologies designed to address unwavering challenges.

The annual event saw a display of the best of IIT Delhi's collaborative and interdisciplinary sharing through the breadth of the research that was presented. Over 80 cutting-edge technologies developed by IIT Delhi researchers were showcased as product demonstrations at the Industry Day event.

An augmented reality platform for supporting children with autism, wearable sensors for real-time healthcare monitoring, infection-resistance polymeric scaffolds for wound healing, bio-medical implant applications, in-built solar charge controllers for refrigerators, waterless urinals, plasma gasification technology for municipal solid waste treatment and energy recovery,a mobile application based rapid diagnostic-test reader for albuminuria; surveillance drones developed in India; two-wheelers running on compressed bio-gas; SARS COV2 RTPCR assay for COVID-19 were among the many innovations being developed at IIT Delhi that caught the attention of business leaders attending the Industry Day.

Other technologies and research, which drew attention of the visitors include in-built solar charge controllers for refrigerators, waterless urinals, plasma gasification technology for municipal solid waste treatment and energy recovery, a mobile application based rapid diagnostic-test reader for albuminuria; surveillance drones developed in India; two-wheelers running on compressed bio-gas; SARS COV2 RTPCR assay for COVID-19; and how social media can be used for managing mental health problems.

In addition, the use of a bacterial biosorbent for lead recovery, the creation of a reusable porous alumina-based device for the removal of heavy metal ions from water bodies and affluents discards, and the investigation of a neuromorphic approach for hand prosthetics were other projects that were also showcased and generated interest alongside charging technology for electric vehicles wirelessly, using coexisting communication over the TV broadcast spectrum, the development of the OpenAirInterface software designed for cutting-edge 5G wireless, wireless research and standardisation beyond 5G, the development of underwater visible light communication and use of blockchain based food security solutions for food safety.

A few other examples of the cutting-edge research by IIT Delhi that were a part of discussions and deliberations included an artificial intelligence based portable device for rapid detection of epilepsy, extremely cold climate clothing for defense personnel, a solution for providing power to biomedical devices and healthcare systems, electric vehicle power converters, a hand exoskeleton for paralytics, recyclable syringes for wastewater treatment, technologies for electric vehicles, humanised chatbots for improving user experience and several more.

Over 130 industry-relevant concept posters created by the students of IIT Delhi were also on display.

Sponsored research has been a key driver for research and an innovative ecosystem at IIT Delhi. In  2021-22, 286 sponsored projects were undertaken with sanctioned funds worth Rs 351.9 crore.  In this period, IIT Delhi took 346 consultancies and signed 14 MoUs with eminent institutions.  In 2021-22, 148 patents were filed by IIT Delhi and in 2021, 3513 research papers were published. Faculty members in IIT Delhi actively engage with corporate partners to bring their research expertise to solve important business and social problems.
