New Delhi: The Central Workshop at IIT Delhi organized a "Manufacturing Innovation Show" to display innovative products developed by the Institute’s first-year undergraduates of all disciplines. The products were developed by the students during their semester-long course, MCP101: Product Realization Through Manufacturing.

More than 150 projects under eight thematic areas, such as Mechatronics, Mechanism, Machines, Smart devices, Sustainability, Agriculture, Automation, Electronics & IoT, and Robotics, were displayed in the Lecture Hall Complex.

The first-year students ideated the products in a group of 5 and then realized the same in 10 weeks using various resources. The students conceived prototypes of agricultural machinery, including automatic seed-sowing and irrigation machines, as well as agricultural robots.

They also showed awareness about sustainability issues and manufactured products such as humidity-based air coolers, energy-efficient escalators, river-cleaning boats, on-road power generation, and speed monitoring systems.

The Director of IIT Delhi, Prof. Rangan Banerjee, visited the exhibition and interacted with the innovators. He praised their ideas and advised them to work further and turn them into successful, beneficial products for society.

Course coordinator Prof. Sagar Sarkar from the Mechanical Engineering department stated that the students had gone through hands-on learning of various key manufacturing processes, such as machining, welding, sheet metal forming, digital manufacturing, electronics manufacturing, etc., in state-of-the-art labs in the Central Workshop.

Before starting their engineering discipline studies, such hands-on experience in realizing a product gives them first-hand experience of manufacturing processes and machine tools.

“When the country is planning for a manufacturing economy, such an exciting experience will bring more engineers and technologists into the domain of manufacturing and enable them to develop more products in the future,” said Dr. Sunil Jha, Professor of Mechanical Engineering and Head, Central Workshop, IIT Delhi.
