IIT Delhi to Hold 56th Convocation on August 2, 2025; the Missile Woman of India, Dr. Tessy Thomas, to be the Chief Guest

New Delhi: IIT Delhi will hold its 56th Convocation ceremony on August 2, 2025. Dr. Tessy Thomas, a distinguished scientist and former Director General (Aeronautical Systems) of the DRDO and known as the Missile Woman of India, will be the chief guest at the convocation.
Addressing a press conference on July 31, 2025, Prof. Rangan Banerjee, the Director of IIT Delhi, said that over 2750 students, including 530 PhDs (highest-ever), will be awarded degrees and diplomas. More than 35 international students from around 20 countries are graduating this year.
“This year we also see our first graduates in the UG BTech course in Energy Engineering and three PG courses, the Interdisciplinary PG MTech course in Robotics, and Master of Science by Research in VLSI Design, Tools and Technology and Artificial Intelligence”, Prof. Rangan Banerjee said.
Mr. Ankit Mondal, B. Tech. in Computer Science and Engineering, will be awarded the President’s Gold Medal. Mr. Jaskaran Singh Sodhi, B. Tech in Materials Science and Engineering, will be awarded the Director’s Gold Medal. Mr. Devinder Kumar, M. Tech. in Structural Engineering, will be awarded the Dr. Shankar Dayal Sharma (former President of India) Gold Medal.
Meritorious students will also be honoured with the Perfect Ten Gold Medals and the Institute Silver Medals.

New Curriculum
The Director said that the revised undergraduate curriculum launched from the academic year 2025-26 emphasizes flexibility, experiential learning, and alignment with contemporary global needs. Key themes include environment and sustainability, creative expression, ethical reasoning, and emerging technologies like AI and machine learning. To support a smooth transition from high school, a dedicated one-week induction precedes academic sessions. Student wellness is a core focus, with a new Life Skills course covering time management, study habits, digital literacy, emotional intelligence, and growth mindset. This holistic approach equips students not only with academic knowledge but also with essential skills to thrive in a rapidly evolving world. The curriculum is designed to inspire, engage, and empower.
IIT Delhi has revised UG, PG and PhD curricula and implemented it from the current academic year.
New Academic Programmes
From the academic year 2025-26, the Institute started two new UG courses - Bachelor of Science in Chemistry, the first of its kind for/at the institute, and a B.Tech. in Design, which complements and supplements the existing B.Des. course; IIT Delhi also started two PG courses in Optics and Photonics.
Alumni
IIT Delhi will honour eight of its esteemed alumni with the Distinguished Alumni Awards (DAA) 2025 at the convocation ceremony.

Instituted in 1992, the DAA has been awarded to 151 alumni to date, representing excellence across diverse fields such as science, technology, entrepreneurship, public service, academia, and innovation.
The Director said that on August 2, 2025, coinciding with the 56th Convocation ceremony, IIT Delhi will launch a DAA Wall in the Lecture Hall Complex. This commemorative installation will honour recipients of the Distinguished Alumni Award (DAA)—the highest recognition conferred by the Institute upon its alumni for exceptional achievements and societal contributions. This initiative reflects IIT Delhi’s commitment to strengthening alumni engagement and recognise the lifelong impact of its graduates.
Continuing Education Programme/ Online Diploma
IIT Delhi's Continuing Education Programme (CEP) conducted 98 programs in hybrid mode, reaching over 5,300 participants with 3.62 lakhs of training man-hours. The programs covered topics from engineering to healthcare, digital innovation, and design. In FY 2024-25, Continuing Education Programmes worth Rs 53 cr were conducted.
CEP, IIT Delhi has launched three online Post Graduate Diploma programmes in Healthcare Product Development and Management, Electric Vehicle (EV) Technology and Advanced Communication Engineering with Quantum and AI Integration for students and professionals.
Research & Development
Sponsored Projects and Consultancies
During the FY 2024-25, 650 sponsored projects and consultancies with a total funding of Rs. 352 crores were undertaken by the Institute through its Industrial Research and Development (IRD) Unit. In addition, 152 technology development projects and consultancies with a total funding of Rs 80 cr were undertaken through FITT.
Technology Hub (T-Hub) on Quantum Materials and Devices (QMD) at IIT Delhi
Funded by the Government of India with an initial allocation of ₹312 crores through March 2031, the QMD Foundation, T-Hub at IIT Delhi, is poised to serve as a national centre of excellence in quantum materials science. The Hub plays a pivotal role in advancing India’s quantum technology roadmap by catalyzing innovation at the intersection of materials science, photonics, and quantum device engineering.
At its core, the QMD T-Hub is committed to developing advanced materials and devices that underpin quantum computing, secure communication, and ultra-sensitive sensing technologies. Its key objective is to develop on-demand single-photon emitters (SPEs), single-photon avalanche detectors (SPADs), and reconfigurable photonic qubit circuits, all of which are essential to the growing quantum technology ecosystem.
Multi-Institutional Faculty Interdisciplinary Research Project (MFIRP)
To address current global research challenges, the IRD Unit has introduced a Multi-Institute Faculty Interdisciplinary Projects (MFIRP) program in partnership with prestigious national and international institutions. The IRD has supported, to date, 112 joint projects with national universities and 144 with international universities.
Key outcomes of the international & national MFIRP projects include 132 publications, 20 patents filed, supervision of 26 joint students, development of joint products and technologies, and the organisation of joint symposiums and workshops.
The international & national universities in MFIRP include: National Yang-Ming Chiao Tung University (NYCU), Taiwan; University College London (UCL), UK; Sorbonne University, France; Southern Denmark University, Denmark; Delft University of Technology (TU Delft), Netherlands; University at Buffalo, USA; Hebrew University of Jerusalem (HUJI), Israel; All India Institute of Medical Sciences, New Delhi (AIIMS), Regional Centre of Biotechnology, Faridabad.
Student Startup Action and Discover and Learn 1-2-3-4 scheme
“Learning to Transform Knowledge to Products” is the key objective of the Students Start-up Action. The IRD Discover & Learn (1-2-3-4) scheme aims to enhance research aptitude among undergraduate and graduate students and increase the component of ‘learning by research’. Significant achievements of the scheme in the last one year include eight publications, filing of five patents, and students’ recognition through awards.
Centres of Excellence (CoE)
Hyundai Motor Group has established a Centre of Excellence (CoE) for Future Mobility Technology, reinforcing high-value research and industry-academia partnerships, with a planned outlay of Rs. 70 cr over the first five years. The CoE will be headquartered at the IIT Delhi Research and Innovation Park. IIT Delhi is the lead institute in this multi-institutional collaboration sponsored by Hyundai Motor Group, with plans for future expansion to include other institutions. The collaboration kicked off with 9 projects (7 at IIT Delhi and one each at IIT Bombay and IIT Madras) involving more than 10 faculty members from different departments.
An MoU has been signed with Wadhwani Innovation Network to set up a CoE on Personalised Healthcare.
250 AI Peta Flops Supercomputing Facility coming up at IIT Delhi Sonipat Campus
Expected to be completed by October 2025. Funded by DST/MeitY as part of the National Supercomputing Machine. Total Amount of Funding: 110 Cr from Govt. + 25 Cr from IIT end. It will cater to high end AI compute related needs, including developing of large-scale AI models, as well as its applications to domains such as material discovery, energy, healthcare, robotics to name a few.
New Initiatives for Teaching Laboratories and Industry Collaborations:
1- The institute has started new initiatives such as (Support for UG & pG laboratory upgradation) and INTENT (INitiative to InTENsify Industry Research & Technology Collaborations).
2- The institute is providing special support for the upgradation of existing equipment and infrastructure in undergraduate teaching laboratories, to set up new experiments to enhance the learning experience of students and to boost their interest and excitement in science/engineering education in general. As a part of this program, the Institute has provided support of Rs. 6 Cr to seven academic units to upgrade their undergraduate teaching laboratories.
3- The INTENT program was launched to intensity interactions and collaborations of IIT Delhi faculty and students with industry. As a part of this program, different departments, centers and schools of IIT Delhi are organizing roundtable meetings and workshops with industry. So far, five such workshops were organized in the broad areas of Material Science, Biomedical Engineering, Biochemical Engineering & Biotechnology, Applied Electronics, and Rural Development & Technology, with participation of 125+ companies.
Startups and Patents
As the industry-interface and innovation arm of IIT Delhi, FITT continues to catalyze India’s deeptech startup movement. Over 200 startups have been currently incubated, with 34 new ventures added during August 2024-June 2025 alone (total incubation 450 startups). The institute has enabled startup fundraising of over Rs 175 cr, with portfolio companies securing an additional Rs 800cr in follow-on funding and delivering two successful exits to date. The total portfolio valuation now exceeds Rs 10,000cr. In the last one year, FITT also oversaw the development of 144 technologies, filed 133 patents, executed 25 licensing deals, and partnered with leading global players like Microsoft (UnnatiAI) and the Novo Nordisk Foundation to drive innovation in AI and healthcare. With 12 more startups in active exit discussions, FITT is shaping IIT Delhi into a national powerhouse for research-driven entrepreneurship.

Placement 2024-25

Major national and international recruiters include American Express, Barclays, BCG, BlueStone Jewellery & Lifestyle Private Limited, Deutsche India Pvt Ltd, BPCL, Google, Graviton Research Capital, Meesho, HPCL, Microsoft, Oracle, PayU, IOCL, Squarepoint Capital, Texas Instruments, C-DOT, Hero MotoCorp, Bajaj Auto, Godrej, Qualcomm, HCL Tech, Samsung, and Ambience.
Infrastructure Development at IIT Delhi
IIT Delhi continues to expand and improve its infrastructure facilities to excel in academic excellence and to encourage research and innovation. As a part of this process, modernized and well-equipped research laboratories and Central Research Facilities are being created in the newly constructed SAATHI building in Sonipat Campus. The newly built Nalanda Apartments would meet the increased demand for residential accommodation of girls' students, international scholars and newly joined faculty members. To improve student experience, a new Food Court has been built in the Hostel area and the Staff canteen has been renovated with modern facilities. In addition, several new initiatives and sustainable measures have been undertaken recently to create safe and accessible infrastructure enabling an inclusive and welcoming environment.
International Relations
In the last one year, IIT Delhi signed MoUs with 23 universities and institutions across the globe to promote bilateral academic cooperation, researcher and student mobility, and exchange programs. The institute exchanged 33 students across 19 universities around the world and hosted more than 220 visitors as part of academic delegations from more than 50 universities across 21 countries.
For Students
1- Academic Progress Group- A dedicated group of faculty members, called the Academic Progress Group (APG), assists students who find themselves academically adrift, ensuring that temporary setbacks do not derail their academic progress. The group’s initiatives include offering structured academic advising, identifying subject-specific challenges, and allocating trained student tutors to provide targeted academic assistance. Additionally, to alleviate external pressures that may impact academic focus, the group works to ensure access to hostel accommodation for affected students, thereby helping them better manage their time and commitments.
2- Language Mentorship - To support students facing academic challenges linked to language difficulties, customized lesson plans and dedicated learning materials were developed to address their specific language needs, aligning the content closely with academic requirements. It is aimed at building the students’ confidence and improving their language proficiency to help them succeed academically.
3- Buddy Program: UG buddy program has been expanded to PG buddy and international buddy program. The Institute launched the buddy program to bridge the gap between incoming and senior postgraduates, offering structured guidance, emotional support, and practical advice on navigating academic challenges and personal adjustments.
4- Wellness workshops: A 12-week wellness workshop from January to April 2025, offering about 25 sessions twice a week, organised.
5- Department based mental health awareness programme for students, faculty and staff.
6- Guidance during the placement: Counsellors assist students on placement days, providing support tailored to their immediate needs. This initiative aimed to help students manage anxiety, cope with the pressures of the day, and perform at their best during the placement process.
7- Counselling Services activities: For the wellbeing of students, online sessions and orientation sessions are conducted with first year students. Hostel wise also Board for Students Welfare student representatives carry out sessions with the help of in-house Counsellors for immediate, better, easier, and efficient access to Counselling Support within the Hostels.
8- The strength of the Counselling team has increased to 14 Counsellors.
9- Immediate psychiatric support available.
10- Tied up with several Hospitals starting from October 2023 to provide extra Psychiatric/ Psychological support to our students on an urgent basis and support them to get quick access.
11- For proper communication and support within the Institution Departments to help students suffering from any kind of psychological issue, provision of official break has been created, which helps students to take a break, get proper mental health support and assessment done.
12- Regular yoga and meditation camps for students, faculty and staff.
13- Creation and Integration of the BHM App – it’s a centralized digital platform aimed at streamlining hostel operations and enhancing the student experience.
14- Deployment of QR-based Attendance System in Hostels – To address challenges in manual mess attendance, efforts were made to introduce a QR-based attendance system to improve accuracy and streamline operations. The pilot served as a critical step toward building a more transparent and tech-enabled mess management framework.
15- Reasonable Accommodation Policy: The Reasonable Accommodation policy ensures that the students with disability have access to best pedagogical practices suitable for their specific disabilities.
16- Transformative Leadership in STEMM (TLS) Workshop: Jointly organized by the Initiative for Caste Equity, ODI and the SC/ST Cell, the TLS Workshop is a flagship initiative of IIT Delhi to address SC/ST underrepresentation in academic leadership in STEM. Two workshops designed for advanced-stage Ph.D. scholars from the SC/ST community at IITs, NITs, and other Higher Education Institutes have already been organised witnessing an overwhelming response.
Faculty:
IIT Delhi is working actively towards strengthening its teaching and research ecosystem, the faculty-student ratio and maintaining its focus on multi-disciplinarity and excellence. In the last one year, we have hired 37 faculty members across disciplines. As on date, we have 17 Foreign faculty members and provisions are underway to attract more foreign faculty members to join the institute (e.g. half-time contract appointment).
We remain committed to ensuring inclusivity of Reserved category candidates and have taken many steps such as special recruitment drives to fulfill our commitment.
Our faculty members have received the prestigious Rashtriya Vigyan Puraskar 2024 Vigyan Shri Award, the National Teacher Award 2024, and several were elected fellows of the INAE, INSA, and NASI this past year. As many as 112 IIT Delhi faculty are included in the recent Stanford/Elsevier list of top 2% Scientist Rankings globally.
Staff:
The Institute selected 49 new administrative and technical staff members between August 2024 to June 2025.
The Institute has initiated International Mobility Programme for Staff (IMPS) with an objective to enhance staff skills, efficiency, effectiveness, learn best practices and internationalization. The first batch under the IMPS, comprising seven IIT Delhi officials, successfully completed their study visit to the University of Exeter, UK; Sorbonne University, Paris, France; and Leibniz Universität Hannover, Germany.
International Rankings:
1-IIT Delhi secured a rank of #123 in the QS World University Rankings (WUR) 2026. This corresponds to a significant improvement in the WUR ranking compared to the previous years (150th and 197th WUR in 2025 and 2024 editions, respectively). With this, IIT Delhi is #1 in India in terms of QS-WUR.
2- In the QS World University “Subject Rankings” 2025, IIT Delhi has improved its rank from 45 to 26 in Engineering and Technology and has emerged as No. 1 Indian institute in Engineering & Technology. IIT Delhi is ranked among top 100 world institutions in 12 specific subjects.
3- In the QS Asia University Rankings, IIT Delhi has secured 44th position, whereas in the QS Sustainability rankings, IIT Delhi has improved its rank from 426 to 171 and has emerged as the best institute in India in terms of Sustainability rankings.
National Rankings:
NIRF ranked IIT Delhi as the second-best institute in the country in the Engineering category for the sixth time in a row. IIT Delhi has secured 3rd position in the research category and 4th position Management institute. In the overall category, IIT Delhi was ranked at the 4th position.
IIT Delhi - Abu Dhabi
IIT Delhi - Abu Dhabi has rapidly emerged as a thriving international academic hub, marking a significant milestone in global STEM education and the deepening partnership between India and the UAE. From foundational agreements to a vibrant operational campus, the institution is set to become a pivotal centre for knowledge and innovation.
Key highlights:
1- Rapid Development & Operationalization: An intensive construction phase from September to December 2023 swiftly transformed the campus. Operationalization received active support from the Abu Dhabi Government, ensuring necessary approvals, legal incorporation, and accreditation.
2- A new academic programme B.Tech. in Chemical Engineering has been launched from the academic year 2025. With this, currently, a total 5 academic programmes are being offered by the IITD-Abu Dhabi (1 M.Tech., 02 B.Tech. and a PhD)
3- Accreditation Achieved: All current programs and the institution itself have received accreditation in the UAE by the Commission for Academic Accreditation (CAA), Ministry of Higher Education and Scientific Research (MOHESR), UAE.
4- Growing Student Body:
a) Current total student strength is 94 (as of April 2025).
b) Expected to reach approximately 200 by August 2025, including around 130-140 undergraduate, 40 master's, and 25 Ph.D. students.
5- Strategic Research Verticals: Focused on critical areas for the UAE, including Energy and Sustainability, Computing (AI/ML), Materials, Healthcare, and Smart and Sustainable Infrastructure.
6- Robust Collaborations: Strategic MoUs signed with top Abu Dhabi universities: Khalifa University, MBZUAI, Sorbonne University Abu Dhabi, and Zayed University. Joint research and collaborative activities have already begun with Khalifa University and MBZUAI.
7- Future Vision: Ambitious targets for 2025-2026 include further academic expansion, enhanced student activities, scaling logistics for growth, strengthening internships and placements, building R&D infrastructure, expanding collaborations, developing executive training, fostering entrepreneurship, and planning for the permanent campus. Faculty recruitment is actively underway.
