Types of Leave

While faculty members hardly get work out of their system, they do sometimes need to get out of the system. Maintaining work-life balance is a necessity, and this is not hard to accomplish at IIT Delhi with good planning. Many types of leave are available to faculty, some of it is duly working leave. IIT Delhi leave rules are in accordance with the leave policy for government employees. A formal leave is required even on weekends and holidays if you intend to be outside Delhi – this is known as station leave. Short leaves for professional activities like attending a conference or committee meeting are known as special casual leave and are treated as being “on duty.”

Faculty cadre counts as ‘vacation staff,’ meaning members are eligible to seek vacation leave during the vacation period between semesters. Vacation leave is useful to visit other universities or research institutions. Other types of leave include medical leave, maternity leave, earned leave (2% days per completed month of service), sabbatical leave, extra ordinary leave (EOL), etc. EOL can be for a long duration (up to 2 years) and without pay. Eight days of casual leave in a year (available in blocks of half-days) is available to help employees manage chores and errands.

POSTSCRIPT:

It is important to remember that even on leave we remain members of IIT Delhi faculty and must carry that role. The other thing to note is that there is no concept of a ‘second job.’ An IIT Delhi faculty member is an IIT Delhi faculty member. Full-time. All the time. This means any compensation by an outside agent for their time and expertise is officially earned as a faculty member of IIT Delhi (except when on leave without pay). These are either paid through the institute or otherwise declared to the institute (and the institute receives a fraction of that compensation depending on the annual amount – see http://estb.iitd.ac.in/RulePosition/Faculty/Honorarium.pdf for rules.)
