Vireshwar Kumar

Computer Science and Engineering

Research Interests: Security and privacy of cyber-physical systems (e.g., smart homes, vehicles and drones), applied cryptography, adversarial machine learning

Vireshwar was born and brought up in an academically oriented family in Rohua village located in Muzaffarpur, Bihar. His father was a Mathematics teacher in the nearby government high school. His childhood memories are filled with playing carrom and chess with his father, and hearing motivating stories about great scholars and scientists.

After his senior secondary education in his hometown, he secured admission in IIT Delhi and thereafter worked briefly at Indian Institute of Science (IISc) where he got oriented towards an academic career.

He went on to do a PhD at Virginia Tech where his research work was focussed on anatomizing the security and privacy of the communication protocols utilized in smart vehicles. He was the recipient of the outstanding PhD student award at Virginia Tech. Before joining IIT Delhi, he worked at Purdue University where he investigated security issues in modern cars, drones and Bluetooth devices.

“I am extremely excited to be back to my alma mater an am looking forward to re-living my memories and creating new ones while attending the same classes, but now as a teacher. I envisage my current role as a torchbearer for guiding the young IITians on the path of self-exploration and self-learning” he says.

His immediate research plan is to develop mechanisms to automate the discovery and mitigation of security and privacy vulnerabilities in the rapidly developing paradigm of cyber-physical systems.

“My long term goal is to make India self-reliant in developing and securing the next-generation cyber systems,” he says
