Under the Institute Lecture Series, an online Webinar on "COVID-19 in India: Past, Present and Future” has been organized by IIT Delhi. The Director of the Trivedi School of Biosciences at Ashoka University, Dr. Shahid Jameel will be the speaker who, during the lecture, will review the SARS Coronavirus 2’s outbreak in India, the science of COVID-19, vaccine development and how this pandemic is likely to end. 
 
Abstract of the talk:
 
A new infectious disease was reported in early January 2020, which quickly became a pandemic by mid-March. The disease is coronavirus infectious disease 2019 (Covid-19) and the causative agent is SARS
coronavirus 2. From the first case in late January 2020 to now, India has accumulated over 28 million confirmed cases and over 340,000 deaths, becoming one of the most affected countries. In this lecture, I will review the outbreak in India, the science of COVID-19, vaccine development, and how this pandemic is likely to end.
 
About the Speaker:
 

Prof. Shahid Jameel studied Chemistry at Aligarh Muslim University and Indian Institute of Technology - Kanpur, India and obtained a PhD in Biochemistry at Washington State University, USA. His postdoctoral work in Virology was at the University of Colorado Health Sciences Center, Denver, USA. In 1988 he set up the Virology Group at ICGEB, New Delhi, led it for 25 years and researched human viruses. He was CEO of the DBT/Wellcome Trust India Alliance from 2013 to 2020 and is now Director, Trivedi School of Biosciences at Ashoka University. Prof. Jameel received the Shanti Swarup Bhatnagar Prize in 2000, and is an elected Fellow of India’s science academies.
